The Rugged All-Terrain offers the triple-interface convenience of high-speed USB 2.0 connectivity (which is USB 1.1 backward compatible) along with both FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 interfaces. With this triple-interface functionality, along with the drive's driver-free and plug-and-play features, exchanging data between Macs and PCs is as easy as it gets. The Rugged All-Terrain even comes with a USB power-sharing cable for low powered USB hubs/computers. (The Rugged All-Terrain requires no extra drivers for Windows XP/2000/Vista and Mac OS X operating systems.)
This high-performance drive features a spin speed of 5400 rpm, an 8 MB cache, and a transfer rate of up to 800 Mbits per second via the FireWire 800 connection. I have a two year old Mac Book Pro with a 100 gig hard drive inside of it and had been using an external Lacie D2 drive for bringing out to gigs (I store all of the audio samples/songs on an external drive). The problem is that it was too bulky and heavy and had a bulky power brick that I had to bring along, instantly adding unnecessary weight to my lap bag.
So I looked into the Lacie rugged drive and was a bit skeptical about it because it was a 5400rpm instead of the D2's 7200.

I had been looking for another portable hard drive - I have a few. I have some requirements that are not easy to satisfy. But lo! I just got my new "Lacie Rugged." 160 GB. (Windows or Mac - I use Macs.).
About an inch taller than a pack of cigarettes. About an inch thick
It has a rubber bumper-like casing so I think I could throw it at the television during bad commercials and have it bounce off without injury - to the Lacie.

The Good: Bought this as a means to add additional, workable storage for my Mac. Needed something that could back up large files quickly but still give me the ability to work off of the drive when needed. The fact that it is one of just a few drives out there that can accept many different kinds of connections (USB, Firewire 400, and most importantly fast Firewire 800) makes this drive perfect.
