Amazon.com: For those Japanese sci-fi fans whose appetites were whetted by the previous DVD set of Ultraman's adventures, Series One, Volume 2 presents the remaining episodes of the '60s space giant's battles against a horde of villainous (and improbable-looking) monsters. The brainchild of special effects legend Eiji Tsuburaya (who created the monsters for many of Japan's movie creatures, including Godzilla), Ultraman was a popular children's series on both sides of the Pacific (and around the world) and spawned numerous sequels and imitators in its country of origin. The plot of each episode revolved around the Science Patrol, a small group of dedicated scientist/soldiers who fought a ceaseless parade of giant monsters that threatened Japan. Thanks to a chance encounter with an alien, one of the Patrol's members had the ability to transform into the colossal silver-and-red-suited Ultraman and aid the Patrol in dispatching the troublesome beasts. Volume 2 essentially follows this structure in all 19 episodes presented on its three discs, with several of the series' most popular monsters (dinosaur Gomora, the bizarre humanoid Dada, birdlike Dorako, and the excitable and well-liked Pigmon) making their first or return appearances in these episodes. The action is frantic and fun, and should please younger first time viewers as much as the older Ultra-fans.
The previous Ultraman disc set (Series One, Volume One) received flak in fan circles due to audio and video problems, and while the image quality in this set seems improved over the previous entry, the audio problems do persist to a degree (specifically, the English language tracks 'drop out' during certain scenes and are replaced by a subtitled Japanese track). The impact of this issue will undoubtedly vary from buyer to buyer, but there's no denying that at their core, the shows remain enjoyable, no matter the state of the audio tracks. A multi-page insert booklet is included in the set, which presents interviews with several of the original Japanese cast members, while a pair of trading cards with action scenes from the show and a monster gallery featurette are all welcome and fun extras. --Paul Gaita
Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - Memories Watching this series brought back memories of rushing home from school, grabbing a bologna and cheese and sitting in front of the TV every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and not moving for the next 30 minutes to watch my generation version of "Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers".
I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars because like the previous volume some of the English tracks were missing, but that didn't take away from the enjoyment.
Now if they would only put out a DVD set of "Johnny ... Read More
Rating: - It's still Ultraman Hey, nothing to really complain about. It is Ultraman! When I first saw and purchased an Utraman vid on VHS some years ago from another source, Iwas ecstatic! There were only a few episodes on it so it was just a teaser. I now own both sets of the DVDs and I am very happy with them. Sure there are a few places with subtitles, no matter still very enjoyable. Having an Ultraman viewing/party soon with a bunch of guys that grew up watching it. I recomend both sets!
Rating: - There are NO sound problems on these disks!!! People,
There are NO sound problems with these disks, meaning it is not a "defect" that the language sometimes changes to japanese. When this happens, it is because those are ADDED SCENES, not presented in the original United States television series. Therefore, just enjoy the bonus feature of having extra footage.
Rating: - Ultraman classic. Volume 2 still has some glitches that should be fixed. Most of the glitches are in the audio but the picture is pretty good. It would be nice if the same people at Lowry Digital who did the Jamed Bond box sets would do these two volumes. However, after years of waiting for this it is still fun to watch. Excellent packaging.
Rating: - Priceless 2 As with Volume 1, Volume 2 delivers! This is a great series with all the campy cheese and fun that I remember from childhood. And to my surprise, this inexpensive, USED set did arrive with the 2 trading cards! If your a fan of this series and do not have volume 2, order it immediately!
