Amazon.com: Doris Day was nearing her popular zenith, and Jack Lemmon just hitting his stride, when they teamed up for It Happened to Jane, a small-town comedy in the Capra vein. Doris is a widowed mom whose Maine lobster business is snarled by railroad tycoon Ernie Kovacs (hiding behind a skullcap and a huge cigar), the 'meanest man in America.' Her lawsuit against him, aided by lawyer-suitor Lemmon, gains national headlines. This is a curious movie:crucial scenes seem to have been left unwritten, while sequences involving Cub Scouts and an oddly impassioned Town Hall Meeting go on endlessly. Director Richard Quine was making some fun movies around this time (Bell, Book, and Candle), but the fizz is only intermittent here, mostly provided by Lemmon's jack-in-the-box youthfulness. Doris sings a couple of tunes and brings her downhome tomboy routine to New York City, where the movie employs some of the quaint TV personalities of the day. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - It happened to Jane This is a great movie.. I've been looking for it for years. It is nice to see a good movie and see a happy ending.
Rating: - It happened to Jane I ordered this to show at a 50's movie night-for current teens.I hoped it would be Doris Day fun and clean. We didn't show it because, though clean, 'twas a bit corney, and the plot very slow.It had a happy ending and right prevailed, but Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday" was a better choice.LAS
Rating: - Movie Great but DVD POOR QUALITY While the movie was entertaining, picture clarity and sound fine, the DVD is either defective or just made poorly. It worked for several viewings, then trouble began -- in order to playback, the DVD would have to be reinserted many times. My player is not the problem and is working well - this is a DVD manufacturer defect, so it's sort of a pot luck chance with DVD quality, which is very unfair to the consumer. The 5 stars is for the movie, but the DVD maker gets a minus.
Rating: - Doris and Jack Two comic talents and just more fun with Doris and nutty Jack back in their hay day, two talents you won't find in today's Hollywood.
Rating: - It Happened to Jane I've been looking for this movie for years, but didn't remember the name - just the plot.I looked up Doris Day on Wikipedia and found the name, then came to Amazon and found the DVD.It's a wonderful movie, cute story and having it on DVD is fantastic.
