Based on Jill Murphy's book, this charming movie is setin an English boarding school for witches--complete with orange and blackschool uniforms, broom-flying exercises, and potion assignments for lab. The incompetent student of the title, Mildred, is played by a fetching youngFairuza Balk.Diana Rigg is the nasty head teacher, Tim Curry the (oddly) idolized GrandWizard, and TV's Facts of Life maven Charlotte Rae does double duty as the school's kindly dean and her evil witch twin, who's bent on taking over theschool. Directed by Robert Young, this 68-minute video features less thanstate-of-the-art effects and several songs that stop the action--mostbizarrely an outdoor assembly performance by Curry that turns into a weirdmusic video. Still, preteen girls will identify with the beleaguered heroine who overcomes her wickedly snooty rival, a teacher who doesn't believe in her, and a band of dastardly witches and, of course, saves the day. I got this DVD because it was a favorite when I was growing up.The movie can be cheesey at times, but I still think it is fab.

I am 21 years old and I have been watching this film every halloween since I was a little kid. It's a marvelous movie that people of all ages can relate to. It's just good clean fun. I will definitely share this with my kids in the future. I love "The Worst Witch" and highly recommend it!

Oh what a film!
Talk about a good time for the whole family.I loved this movie as a child, and now I love it still.
Fairuza Balk is splendid as Mildred Hubble, the worst witch at her academy.She can never seem to do anything right, and others give her a hard time because of it.
The acting is pretty good, considering it is a children's film and the story is still easy to watch as you get older (it is not a syrupy story).The music is catchy, too.

Fabulous children's movie. Loved it as a child. Still love it, as an adult.

I have loved this movie for many years.It reminds me of how hard it is for a preteen girl to get along with others and to fit in.The mean girls (Ethel Hallow and her cohorts) and the nice girls (Maude and the others) make life for a poor misfit girl who is trying to make it at the Witches' Academy and become a very powerful witch pretty hard to live with. She does succeed in making everyone proud of her at the end, doesn't she.
