Editorial Review:
Description: The terror begins when the crew of a spaceship investigates a transmission from a desolate planet, and discovers a life form that is perfectly evolved to annihilate mankind. One by one, each crew member is slain until only Ripley is left, leading to an explosive conclusion that sets the stage for its stunning sequel, 'Aliens.'
Amazon.com essential video: A landmark of science fiction and horror, Alien arrivedin 1979 between Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back asa stylishly malevolent alternative to George Lucas's space fantasy.Partially inspired by 1958's It! The Terror from Beyond Space, this instant classic set a tone of its own, offering richly detailedsets, ominous atmosphere, relentless suspense, and a flawless ensemblecast as the crew of the space freighter Nostromo, who fall preyto a vicious creature (designed by Swiss artist H.R. Giger) that hadgestated inside one of the ill-fated crew members. In astar-making role, Sigourney Weaver excels as sole survivor Ripley, becomingthe screen's most popular heroine in a lucrative movie franchise. Tomeasure the film's success, one need only recall the many images thathave been burned into our collective psyche, including the'facehugger,' the 'chestburster,' and Ripley's climactic encounter withthe full-grown monster. Impeccably directed by Ridley Scott,Alien is one of the cinema's most unforgettablenightmares. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - THE BEST IN SCI-FI HORROR Ridley Scott created one of the most influential films in the genre of science fiction with ALIEN, and Sigourney Weaver's Ripley is almost without peer ( Linda Hamilton's Sarah Conner in the TERMINATOR films being one of the few exceptions ) as a heroine- in any genre. The creature in this movie is one of the best, and most-recognized in cinematic history.
The special effects are great for the time, and suffer only a bit in close-ups. The cast is excellent. The tension mounts slowly ... Read More
Rating: - best sci fi film ever................................... had to have this one forever because i think its the best scifi film ever and a must have for any serious collector.
Rating: - Incredibly good suspense film This is an amazing film that has so much suspense and atmosphere it truly pulls the viewer in. There's plenty of shocks which are excellently timed, and when the alien does appear it doesn't disappoint in the least. The cast are all superb and the direction is incredible.
A fantastic film.
Rating: - Alien- Amazing Female Lead in SciFi/Horror Classic When I first saw this in the theatrical release, I was stunned: an amazing female lead (Weaver) and a mind-bending, artistic look. The very essence of this movie is also what you DON'T see- the "alien", instead you see dripping water, shadows, you HEAR the screams, but what's causing them??? Where is it? Great ensemble cast too and forget the cornbread...
Amazing. Watch it with the lights out and no interruptions. I dare you...
Rating: - Ridley Scott's finest hour! This truly is Ridley Scott's finest hour. Here he makes an absolute masterpiece in the movie industry. He does everything superbly to create a fantastic movie offering richly detailed sets, ominous atmosphere, relentless suspense, fantastic storytelling and great special effects for it's time which still are hard to believe how good they are. This is truly a horror classic in the genre and is still largely popular and recognised today. Alien is as close as you would come to an excellent and polished ... Read More
