Amazon.com essential video: Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion.Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. --Kimberly Heinrichs
Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - Great movie I thought this film was great. It's an in-depth depiction of Jesus' life. This film covers everything from the birth of Jesus to His resurrection. This film was a mini-series on TV years ago and it was gook than. I recommend it. Just recently I was told about a new book entitled "The Enlightenment, What God Told Me After One Million Prayers: A Message for Everyone," by John H. Eagan. I just finished it. It's really great and deals with Jesus' teachings and His Passion so deeply it will bring ... Read More
Rating: - best movie ever made I had seen this movie when it was first shown on t.v. as an mini-series, and have loved it ever since. This movie gives a close account of the life of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the gospels. I will cherish this movie for years to come.
Rating: - A truly inspiring and beautiful film Jesus of Nazareth is a beautiful film that accurately depicts the extraordinary life and death of Jesus Christ. The acting is superb, and the sets and costumes transport you to 1st century Israel and Palestine. I have used the film to help my 7th grade Religious Education students come to know and love Jesus Christ.
Rating: - Not as biblically accurate. This video is not as biblically accurate as I was led to believe by the other reviews.I purchased this to augment my bible study teaching so I may be a little tougher on the movie then most people.Dramatic license is taken in several places because of the need to let the viewer know some of the backround as well as the portraying of the actual incidents in Jesus' life. The movie is already 6 hours long so I can understand the necessity of this but some of decisions by the producer are almost ridiculous. ... Rating: - Brilliant Very nice interpretation of the story of Christ's life. The blue eyes of actor Robert Powell is bright, dense and expresses both compassion and suffering borne by the Passion that contributes to the brightness of this beautiful film.
"Jesus of Nazareth" has converted one of my fellow class mate. I recommend it with that of "The Passion of Christ" by Mel Gibson.
