Editorial Review:
Amazon.com: This documentary, which profiles several young men whose creative expression consists of doing tricks on skateboards, rises above being a standard skateboard flick, thanks to some very professional photography. The camera often follows skateboarders as they careen through public places, managing to keep pace with the action so risky tricks can be appreciated up close. Common techniques involve hopping a skateboard up onto steps and benches, or better yet, onto steel banisters that run alongside concrete stairways. In tight shots of skaters zipping down the banisters, the split-second timing and perfect balance required to perform such feats is impressive. There's a montage of skaters seen hurting themselves when tricks fail, reinforcing the aspect of danger more effectively than the obligatory warning at the beginning of the film not to try these stunts at home. The need to always find a new challenge is apparent, and there's a brief visit to a garage outfitted with ramps where skateboarders practice new tricks before showing them off on public sidewalks. A running theme of the production is how the young men are constantly being hassled, with security guards always seeming to show up to order them off private property. Depending on your point of view, of course, a skateboard hero can be just an immature nuisance. But this 35-minute film provides a generally positive look at some of the flashiest skateboarding captured on video. --Robert J. McNamara
Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - Great sk8 video on a no frills DVD. The skating and music are simply awesome. The focus is mainly on street with a little bit of vert in the montage sections.Excellent performances throughout, but Daewon Song and Diego Bucchieri really stand out.Daewon demonstrates his ability to skate roof-gaps and picnic tables in "weird configurations."Diego shows a lot of speed and guts when it comes to stairs and ledges. The encounters with authority figures are equally entertaining and disturbing. An extra special montage of injuries ... Rating: - a dvd with nothing special at all, pretty dissapointing I would have given this video five stars, but this is a horrible dvd. Skating is top notch in this video, but the picture quality is just the same as vhs, which is lame. Plus, you can't even skip to people's parts. There is no bonus footage, no menu, nothing special. This is a great skate flick with great music from people like Built to Spill, The Sea and Cake, and Mr. Dibbs and is definitely worth viewing, but don't get it expecting a lot from it since it is a dvd like I did.
