Editorial Review:
Product Description: One of our most distinguished thinkers argues that the 'rise of the rest' is the great story of our time.
'This is not a book about the decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone else.' So begins Fareed Zakaria's important new work on the era we are now entering. Following on the success of his best-selling The Future of Freedom, Zakaria describes with equal prescience a world in which the United States will no longer dominate the global economy, orchestrate geopolitics, or overwhelm cultures. He sees the 'rise of the rest'—the growth of countries like China, India, Brazil, Russia, and many others—as the great story of our time, and one that will reshape the world. The tallest buildings, biggest dams, largest-selling movies, and most advanced cell phones are all being built outside the United States. This economic growth is producing political confidence, national pride, and potentially international problems. How should the United States understand and thrive in this rapidly changing international climate? What does it mean to live in a truly global era? Zakaria answers these questions with his customary lucidity, insight, and imagination.
Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - Ok, not amazing This is an interesting book, especially being written by an Indian-American. But it's honestly just another book that gives us warning that India and China are on the verge of really becoming important players on the world's scene. This is not new information and there's really not that much more in this book that can't be found elsewhere. But it's intelligently written and flows nicely. I also like that there's a lot of history backing up his reasons for saying what he says about India and China. ... Read More
Rating: - Great Book! Great book.I loved it and am passing it on to my friends. It has alot of the same qualities of "The World is Flat", but more of what is happening in China.
Rating: - Uh huh Great ideas, but let's just say I fell asleep every time I opened up this darned book.
Rating: - Post American World Absorbing and informing review of world history up to the current time and excellent suggestions for political actions in the future for theUSA.
Rating: - The Post-American Zakaria A lot of what he has written is interesting and useful, but I have two areas of disagreement. The two are connected:
The first is the nature of the Islamist Threat.Zakaria seems still to be living in the world of Edward Said and John Esposito.Esposito wrote The Islamic Threat, Myth or Reality?Esposito argued that the threat was largely a myth.He was the expert on the Middle East most invited to the White House until 9/11.After that, he was replaced by Bernard Lewis. The Esposito ...
