It is everywhere around us. Even worse, it gets inside us: sapping our energy, undermining our health, and making us more vulnerable to anxiety, depression, and disease. Now, based on Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn’s renowned mindfulness-based stress reduction program, this groundbreaking book shows you how to use natural, medically proven methods to soothe and heal your body, mind, and spirit. By using the practices described within, you can learn to manage chronic pain resulting from illness and/or stress-related disorders…discover the roles that anger and tension play in heart disease…reduce anxiety and feelings of panic…improve overall quality of life and relationships through mindfulness meditation and mindful yoga. More timely than ever before, Full Catastrophe Living is a book for the young and the old, the well, the ill, and anyone trying to live a healthier and saner life in today’s world.
Amazon.com Review: Kabat-Zinn, founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic at theUniversity of Massachusetts Medical Center, is perhaps the best-knownproponent of using meditation to help patients deal with illness. (Thesomewhat confusing title is from a line in Zorba the Greek inwhich the title character refers to the ups and downs of family lifeas 'the full catastrophe.') But this book is also a terrificintroduction for anyone who has considered meditating but was afraidit would be too difficult or would include religious practices theyfound foreign. Kabat-Zinn focuses on 'mindfulness,' a concept thatinvolves living in the moment, paying attention, and simply 'being'rather than 'doing.' While you can practice anything 'mindfully,' fromtaking a walk to cleaning your house, Kabat-Zinn presents severalmeditation techniques that focus the attention most clearly, whetherit's on a simple phrase, your breathing, or various parts of yourbody. The book goes into detail about how hospital patients haveeither improved their health or simply come to feel betterdespite their illness by using these techniques, but thesemeditations can help anyone deal with stress and gain a calmer outlookon life. 'When we use the word healing to describe theexperiences of people in the stress clinic, what we mean above all isthat they are undergoing a profound transformation of view,'Kabat-Zinn writes. 'Out of this shift in perspective comes an abilityto act with greater balance and inner security in the world.' --BenKallen

Purchasing the accompanying CDs has allowed me to put this wisdom into practice. I recommend this book and the guided mindfulness CDs without hesitation.

Rating: - Full Catastrophe Living The book is very detailed regarding how one stress clinic helps their clients. The author has some very good points, but is long winded.
Rating: - Getting used to the idea I am about half way through this book - it was a little bit of a culture shock to get into this way of thinking and acting, but I am enjoying the challenge and think that it has already got me thinking about how I deal with stress and everday events - I have been dealing with some serious medical issues, and need to reduce my stress - I believe this will help - the psychologist who recommended it to me thought very highly of it and was convinced I would benefit from it - I think I will....
