Product Description:
Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul (and an obsession with opposable thumbs), he has educated himself by watching television extensively, and by listening very closely to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.
Through Denny, Enzo has gained tremendous insight into the human condition, and he sees that life, like racing, isn't simply about going fast. Using the techniques needed on the race track, one can successfully navigate all of life's ordeals.
On the eve of his death, Enzo takes stock of his life, recalling all that he and his family have been through: the sacrifices Denny has made to succeed professionally; the unexpected loss of Eve, Denny's wife; the three-year battle over their daughter, Zoë, whose maternal grandparents pulled every string to gain custody. In the end, despite what he sees as his own limitations, Enzo comes through heroically to preserve the Swift family, holding in his heart the dream that Denny will become a racing champion with Zoë at his side. Having learned what it takes to be a compassionate and successful person, the wise canine can barely wait until his next lifetime, when he is sure he will return as a man.
A heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope, The Art of Racing in the Rain is a beautifully crafted and captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life . . . as only a dog could tell it.
Customer Reviews Average Rating: Rating: - : ) I bought this book in hardcover and was thrilled to be able to read it without my glasses, the font is large and the (double?) spacing made it easy to read. And the book was fabulous.I love to read, I love dogs, I don't care about racing but after reading this book, I've found racing to be more interesting.I gave this book to my dad to read (he doesn't read books that often) and he's loving it.People who see him with it start conversations about it.Mom is waiting for him to finish so she ... Rating: - Do Not Miss This One - Not Only Fot Dog Lovers At first I thought, The Art of Racing in the Rain, was probably just another story about a loyal dog; a story that has been done to death. I was so wrong! I do not own a dog, but I am an animal lover, so I gave this book a try. So far out of over 100 books read in 2008, this is my favorite to date.
This wonderful novel is a story about the love and bond between human and dog, as told trough the eyes of, Enzo, the dog who is the book's narrator. Enzo admits that he's frustrated by his ... Read More
Rating: - Fantastic Book For The Dog Lover I loved this book!!!The author did a phenominal job in the use of his speech and adjectives as Enzo.It was very believable to what you might think your dog would think or say.Laugh out loud funny and sad story.Enzo is a wonderful soul.
Highly recommended!!!Two barks!!!
Rating: - Sweet and Sad I dearly loved this book and have given it as a gift to my friends! It is such a sweet and sad story with the best of possible endings. I often wonder if my own dogs are thinking the same thoughts as Enzo.
Rating: - My favorite of the year so far This is a perfect combination of whimsy, intelligence and creativity. While most authors might fall into the temptation of getting carried away with the narrative gimmick employed in this novel, this author is very careful to balance the narration of the story with actually telling the story itself. And what a story it is!If you are looking for a truly unique reading experience this summer, start with this book.I give it my highest recommendation.
