I was never very happy with this device, and here's why. The sound quality was a big let-down. Sure, the highs sound good, but there is hardly any bass. You can turn on the bass booster, but that will cause some distortion in music genres that have low bass.
The battery life is another big problem. They claim it will run for twelve hours, and this may be true if you just pick an album and let it play, but if you jump around from album to album a lot, it decreases the battery life dramatically. This is because when you select a song, it buffers the next few tracks in memory and spins down the disk, but if you're listening to a bunch of random songs, the disk is spun up much more frequently because the device cannot know what song you're going to play next. This shortens the battery life.
Still though, the device works just fine after all these years, so it must be given some credit. I tend to use it as a portable hard drive now because I upgraded to a flash-based player with much more space, battery life, and awesome sound quality.

I like many others bought an IPOD that soon failed after the original warranty expired. Hard drive died. The price to fix it is the same as buying a new one so guess what? Apple recommends you buy a new one. Of course. They don't make them to last because if they did their profits would go down. For some reason I I thought apple products lasted longer but I was shocked with the number of people at the 'Genius Bar' with broken Ipods. It seems they don't last more than a few years if you're lucky. Throw it away and consume some more. If you decide to buy an Ipod just be aware that it will soon be in a landfill in bangladesh (we send our e-waste their because it's too toxic for our landfills) and you will have to buy the latest and greatest ipod which is 1 mm thinner. Yippee!

I loved each of my iPods dearly...Dearly. Over the past 7-8mo I have bought 5 different ones. Each one did the dreaded "sad ipod" face either immediately or within a few days. My most recent one lasted a few months, miraculously. They all stopped functioning out of nowhere; I never dropped or hit any of them to cause this. Evidently the previous owner(s) did not take care of the ipod themselves. I would not recommend buying this used, and if you do, please buy a Squaretrade.com warranty. That saved me my money the 2 times I was unable to return my ipod to the seller.

I purchased this item for my daughter for Christmas. She has had absolutely no complaints. That means that this little music maker is a hit with her. If she is satisfied...so am I!!!

I want to say that my iPod came to me perfectly and perhaps it did, except the instruction manual I received was in French (and I can't read French yet), so I haven't made time to find out how I can find out how to use the darn thing. I figured out some of it on my own but I'm still a little lost. At first I thought the battery wasn't holding a long charge, but now I think it may be ok. But since I have been unable to really use it since I don't know how as yet, I don't know for sure... I would rate it high if those two concerns were out of my mind. Everything else about it looks and feels like it's probably a good product and company ???
