| | | DVD The World at War (30th Anniversary Edition) | | | | | | | | | | | Rating: - Voices From the Past As other reviewers note, this is by far the best documentary ever made concerning what is arguably the most momentous series of events in the history of humanity. What most struck me this time around, having seen this several times over the years, was the extraordinary gift of hearing the voices of so many people with direct and consequential experience of the war.People such as Britons Brian Horrocks (the commander of Britain's XXX Corps) and Lord Mountbatten; the Germans General von Manteufel and Hitler's secretary Traudl Jungl; Americans General Lawton Collins and Captain James Stewart; an extraordinary group of Russians; and a great many others, all now long gone, saw and were a consequential part of the unimaginable.Watch their eyes as they give witness, remember their testimony, and reflect. An amazing work and moving beyond measure.
Rating: - Masterpiece Shame on me for taking so long to purchase this piece of world history.I had seen World at War over the years on TV, but never saw the complete work.If you are a history buff and interested in the molding of this great world we live in, this is a must.I would like to think that we could make it mandatory for our children to watch and study in school. But, I will leave it because unfortunatly that will never happen. If anyone is reading this and is thinking about buying this fine set, think no further, DO IT.You will be greatly rewarded with this masterfull piece of our history.
Rating: - World at War collection Excellent collection.Enjoyed it and could not watch anything else until we finished the series.Arrived very quickly.
Rating: - The best documentary on WWII in my opinion. I was 12 years old when this series arrived in the US thanks to PBS. Sir Laurence Olivier is the narrator and there were many principals and ordinary people still alive who consented to interviews. It was an amazing thing to watch with my parents because they would comment on certain things, having lived through it.
Rating: - A Treasure Most Americans have no idea how much the Soviet Union suffered during WWII. I bought this so my children will know that story, as well as the broad expanse of the most fascinating period in modern history. The recent Ken Burns documentary was excellent, from a narrow point of view, but it pales in comparison to this epic.
