Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Yankee Doodle Dandy
as i am not a very good writer, i must say first of all amzon rocks as this was shipped and delivered extremely fast. Now as far as the movie goes, this is one of James Cagneys finest performances, I am a big cagney fan and love him in the gangster films, but his portrayl of george M. Cohan is Unbeleiveable !!!!i am glad he won an oscar for this role, one of my favorite scenes is when he meets up with eddie foy, played by eddie foy jr. remarkable. all around this a definite 5 star movie.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Yankee Doodle Dandy
This is undoubtly the greatest movies that James Cagney ever made.He has always wanted to dance and he got his chance in this movie, and receiving his only academy award for his performance. The part where the father is dying is so well played, you could believe that it may be your own father dying.James Cagney truely was one of the greatest and most amazing actors and person that ever lived.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - yankee doodle dandy was a good movie
i liked the movie...it was good americana and a good history of vaudeville as well as a spirited patriotic film.cagney was great as cohan and i liked his dancing especially" give my regards to broadway". strange as it may seem..these movies are truer as to how americans feel about america than any of the darker ones. the way we won the war....rescuing the world and saving it from hunger after we won....it proved true as cagney sang...about how the yanks were coming.it is a great movie.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "Born on the Fourth of July
Considered by some to be James Cagney's finest performance, YANKEE DOODLE DANDY offers one of the best core ensemble cast with Walter Huston, Joan Leslie, Richard Whorf, and Jeanne Cagney (James' sister) among others.Filmed in Black and White, this beautifully restored film features Cagney's wide range of talent as he portrays George M. Cohan, the quintessential early 20th century American showman.Cagney, by all accounts, captures the unique song-and-dance stylings of the original Cohan, yet adds his unique acting abilities in a range of comedic and dramatic scenes.

The music is exceptional of course, drawing on Cohan's magnificent repertoire: Yankee Doodle Boy, Over There, Give My Regards to Broadway, You're a Grand Old Flag, and others.Cagney won a Best Actor award, Walter Huston won for Best Supporting Actor, and the film garnered a bevy of other awards as well.

Many younger viewers might give the film short-shrift because of its unabashed patriotism and flag-waving.This would be a mistake. The movie accurately captures the tone of Cohan's American showmanship and provides a continually refreshing glimpse into the mind of the 1940s WWII moviegoer.Beyond that, the tone, photography, and performances are remarkable.

The film is a classic! The two-disc DVD includes several fine documentaries: a Michael J. Fox hosted bio of Cagney; and a recent examination of the movie itself. The short subject, "You, John Jones," is a bit of wartime propaganda that nicely promotes the importance of vigilance and sacrifice.

YANKEE DOODLE DANDY is a fine offering that stands up to repeated viewings. It is a fine family film that will entertain adults and children alike.
